Characters:
Billie Jo - she is a girl who is tall and has red hair. She enjoys playing the piano and wants to run away because dust is ruining everything in her town. Billie Jo also wants to become a famous musician. Billie Jo played the piano since she was 5 years old and now she is fourteen or fifteen years old.
Billie Jo's father - he is an alcoholic who was drinking a lot and for this reason he accidentally killed his wife. He is a father who owns a farm with a pond and harvests many crops.
Louise - she is a woman who isn't married yet. Louise became a new mother to Billie Jo because her first mother was by accidentally killed. Louise is polite and nice to others, she doesn't tell Billie Jo or her father what to do. She likes cooking and is well at it.
Setting: The setting is Oklahoma in the 20th century. At Billie Jo's home where she lives with her father there is a wheat farm, windmill, and pond.
Plot: In the beginning of the book it introduces a young family with a daughter, mother, and father. This family lives in a small town in the countryside in Oklahoma. On a summer day of 1934 There was an accident caused by Billie Jo’s Father. While Billie Jo’s mother was fixing up breakfast, her father placed a pail of kerosene next to the sink. Billie Jo’s mother thought it was water and poured it into a coffee. It burst into flames and Billie Jo’s mother ran out of the house. Billie Jo through the bucket of kerosene not knowing that her mother was already coming back. Billie Jo’s mother was burnt an Billie Jo had badly burnt hands aswell. After the accident caused by Billie Jo’s father, Billie Jo’s mother died while giving birth to the new baby brother Franklin. Aunt Ellis was going to pick up Franklin but before she arrived he was dead. After this Billie Jo and her father became very distant from each other. Billie Jo runs away from her father on a steam train and meets a very nice character. The Character was starving and traded a picture for Billie Jo's bread. When Billie Jo got off she decided that she would call her father and tell him she was coming home. When Billie Jo finally comes back, her father meets a woman named louise in his night class. She is his girlfriend and then becomes a new mother for Billie Jo. That year everything went well for the harvest and everyone was close again.
Point of View:
First person: "I heard the wind rise and stumbled from my bed, down the stairs out of the front door, into the yard." First person is a point of view which shows the thoughts of a character.
Theme:
Challenges and Hardships were faced during this book. Billie jo faced the hardships and challenges like her mom dying and her dad becoming a accolic. Her dad became very lonely and is not as close to Billie Jo as when he had his wife. When her mother passed away, Billie Jo's new baby brother died as well.
