Under  the Blood-red Sun

Graham Salisbury

Characters:

Tomi is adventurous and brave for going to the prison to see his father. He loves to play baseball as a catcher with his friends and loves to fish.

Billy is shy around people except for Tomi and his other friends. He's Tomi's best friend and loves to play baseball as a pitcher with him.

Setting:

The setting of the book takes place in Hawaii, right near Pearl Harbor. This took place from 1941-1942, when World War II started.

Plot:

The book is introduced with Tomi, his friends, family, and his Japanese baackground. The middle of the story is when most of the action happens. For example, the war started with blankets of bombs being dropped on top of Tomi's neighborhood. His father was arrested for not flying the American flag on his boat. Tomi and Grampa were forced to kill the pigeons by the police and he broke into jail to see his father. Towards the end of the book, Grampa was arrested and Tomi had to become the man of the family. He had the job of taking care of his mother and sister. As the book reached its final pages, Tomi went back to school and the teacher talked about why the war happened. The story ended with Tomi's father and grandfather still in jail. Even though he is still sad that they aren't with him, he's imagining what it would be like when they come home.

Point of View:

The point of view in Under the Blood-Red Sun is first person. First person is when the main character tells the story from his or her point of view. This is first person because in the book it said, "I shook my head and turned back to the emperor." First person uses "I", so  Under the Blood-Red Sun is first person.

Theme:

The theme of the book is to perservere through your hardships. For example, when Tomi's father and grandfather were arrested, Tomi had to push through his problems so his family will be okay. He persevered through his hardships to keep his family safe. He did this by helping out with every day chores to help support his family. This includes selling food, taking care of the chickens, and making sure Kimi and his mother did their fair share of work. This all shows how when he still missed his father and grampa Tomi pushed through to make sure his family is safe.
