-
Hugh is Capricorns friends and helped him in the beginning of the school year. He taught him what and what not to do, and how school works.
Setting: The setting of the story mostly takes place at the middle school Cap goes to. Its called C Average Middle School. The real name of the school is Claverage Middle School, but Zach Powers likes to knock the "l" off and make it C Average. On the outside, there are lockers lining the school walls.
Plot: Capriccorn Anderson lives on Garland farm with his grandma/teacher Rain. When he was young, his parents died of a fire. While Cap was learning a vocab lesson, Rain suddenly fell out of a tree and had to go tho the hospital. Rain is not well enough to take care of Cap, so he has to go to a foster home and learn to adapt to regular middle school life. He has never been to a real school, as he was always homeschooled. While at the middle school, Cap is bullied by Zach Powers and his friends. He trys to ignore the dead bird in his locker and the secret admirer notes as pranks in his locker. As another "bully joke" the bullies elect Cap as school president, because they know that a big part of being the president requires setting up the school dance and buying all of the supplies for it which he probably doesn't know how to do. He starts using the schools checks for charities, which is not what they are for. Everyone thinks he won't be a good president and will make a fool of himself. Naomi, Zach Powers "friend", starts to realize that Cap is acually a really nice person and isn't a weirdo. She stops bullying him and becomes his friend. Naomi changed the way people thought of Capricorn Anderson. Because of this, when Rain gets better and Cap has to go home, everybody knows they will miss him. As Cap and Rain approach home, they find their home destroyed. The Donnellys, Caps foster parents, welcome them to their home which means Cap can go back to C Average Middle school. Everyone at school is happy to have him back!
Point of View: The point of view is first person, because even though the text says "I", the author tells the story so we know the feelings of all of the characters. It is also is third person omniscient, becuase in each chapter, we know the feelings and thoughts of each character.
Theme: The theme is don't judge a book by it's cover. For example, the text states, "You're awesome Cap!" Naomi cried emotionally. "Awesome!" Naomi thought Cap was a weirdo before she knew him. But once she got to know him, she realized that he has a great personality and he wasn't as weird as she thought he was.
